Seeking Exceptional Minds

Pertha Odessa High School seeks students who possess not only strong academic potential but also a driving curiosity, a collaborative spirit, and a desire to make a difference. We look for individuals who are eager to embrace challenges, contribute positively to our vibrant community, and take full advantage of the unique opportunities POHS offers. Our admissions process is designed to identify these promising young minds from Odessa, across Texas, and beyond.

Our Ideal Candidate

While there is no single “POHS type,” successful applicants typically demonstrate:

  • Academic Readiness: A proven record of achievement in a challenging academic environment, evidenced by strong grades and standardized test scores (where applicable).
  • Intellectual Curiosity: A genuine passion for learning, a questioning mind, and an interest in exploring subjects in depth.
  • Personal Qualities: Evidence of integrity, resilience, leadership potential, and a collaborative spirit.
  • Extracurricular Engagement: Meaningful involvement in activities outside the classroom, showcasing interests, talents, and commitment.
  • Alignment with POHS: A clear understanding of what POHS offers and a thoughtful articulation of how they hope to contribute to and benefit from our community.

The Application Process: A Holistic Review

We believe that a student is more than just a set of numbers. Our admissions committee employs a holistic review process, carefully considering every aspect of an applicant’s file to gain a comprehensive understanding of their strengths, potential, and character. We aim to build a diverse and dynamic student body.

Key Components of the Application:

  1. Online Application Form: This includes biographical information, academic history, and activity lists.
  2. Official Transcripts: We require transcripts from all secondary schools attended, showcasing coursework and grades.
  3. Teacher Recommendations: We ask for recommendations from current teachers (typically in English, Math, or Science) who can speak to the applicant’s academic abilities and classroom contributions.
  4. Counselor Recommendation: A recommendation from a school counselor or principal providing an overview of the applicant’s school context and character.
  5. Student Essays: These are a critical component, allowing applicants to share their voice, experiences, perspectives, and aspirations. Prompts are designed to encourage reflection and authenticity.
  6. Standardized Testing (Optional but Recommended): While we consider applications without them, standardized test scores (such as PSAT, SAT, or ACT) can provide additional context for academic readiness.
  7. Interview: Select candidates will be invited for an interview (either in-person or virtual) with a member of our admissions team. This is an opportunity for a more personal exchange and for applicants to ask questions.
